Evaporation characteristics of wetlands: experience from a wet grassland and a reedbed using eddy correlation measurements
نویسندگان
چکیده
Measurements of evaporation were made from July to November 1999 using the eddy correlation method on two wetland types – wet grassland and reedbeds – in south west England. The evaporative water use of a reed bed exceeded that of the grassland wetland by 15% (or 50mm over the 5 months). The evaporation rates at both sites exceed of the Penman Potential Evaporation estimates calculated for this area. The difference between sites results from the higher roughness length of the reed bed and the lower effective surface resistance of the reed/open water assemblage. At the grassland site, a significant relationship between the surface resistance and water table level has been demonstrated. The water table at this site is managed to maintain the plant diversity and allow some agricultural access. This regime specifies a water table below the surface during the summer period, which results in higher surface resistances and lower evaporation. The results have important implications for local water resources management, especially where wetlands are maintained by pumping from rivers or groundwater.

Measurement of grassland evaporation using a surface-layer scintillometer
A dual-beam surface-layer scintillometer (SLS) was used to estimate sensible heat flux (H) every 2 min for a path length of either 50 or 101 m, for more than 30 months in a mesic grassland in eastern South Africa. The SLS method relies on Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, the correlation between the laser beam signal amplitude variances and the covariance of the logarithm of the beam signal ampl...
متن کاملUsing watershed water balance to evaluate the accuracy of eddy covariance evaporation measurements for three semiarid ecosystems
The eddy covariance technique is a widely used and accepted method to quantify ecosystem-scale mass and energy fluxes. Eddy covariancemeasurements of evaporation, also known as evapotranspiration, are used to determine local, regional and global water budgets, calibrate and validate land surface models, and acquire understanding of ecosystem processes. This paper assesses the accuracy of eddy c...
متن کاملEddy Correlation and Relaxed Eddy Accumulation measurements of CO2 fluxes over grassland
Abstract. Eddy correlation measurements of CO2 fluxes over grassland on peat soil were performed from April to October 1994. In this article the measurement system is described and some results are discussed. The closed path system was compared with an open path eddy correlation system developed at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) in December 1994. Fluxes deduced from the r...

Wetlands as one of the most important and most valuable natural ecosystems in the world play an important role in filtering pollutants and reduce dust, creating a favorable microclimate, biodiversity and genetic and organic materials reservoirs. In central part of Iran, climatic and human factors have created significant differences between dry and wet surfaces of Gavkhooni wetland in recent de...
متن کاملEvaluating the reliability of point estimates of wetland reference evaporation
The Penman-Monteith formulation of evaporation has been criticised for its reliance upon point estimates so that areal estimates of wetland evaporation based upon single weather stations may be misleading. Typically, wetlands comprise a complex mosaic of land cover types from each of which evaporative rates may differ. The need to account for wetland patches when monitoring hydrological fluxes ...
